IELTS and Overseas Employment

Countless seek jobs abroad every year due to various reasons. Some find work overseas because of inadequate job opportunities locally. In countries with unstable economies, some employers tend to take advantage of the fierce competition. They downsize standard worker benefits, pay incompetent salary and offer contractual or casual employment instead of full-time employment. In some cases, even licensed professionals such as nurses, engineers, accountants and teachers are underpaid.

Others seek work overseas to broaden their horizons. They want to meet new people, gain diverse experiences and establish their career abroad. Close attachments, to the country or its residents, and personal preferences, such as climate and culture, influence their decisions. Better employment benefits also attract job seekers from around the world.

In the recent months, healthcare-oriented occupations, such as nurses and therapists, have made a comeback in the list of in-demand jobs in the US, Canada and the UK. Industrial, education and hospitality-centered professions are also in-demand abroad.

IELTS Worldwide

IELTS is one of the qualifications needed for overseas employment. The US, the UK and Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa acknowledge it as a competent English proficiency assessment exam.

More than 9,000 organizations around the world recognize its results. The level of proficiency or band score required for employment varies depending on the profession, company and country.

Work industries that recognize and utilize IELTS in selecting their employees include:

  • Accounting
  • Aviation
  • Construction
  • Energy
  • Engineering
  • Finance
  • Government
  • Law and Veterinary practice
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Pharmacy
  • Tourism

IELTS Examination

Companies, with guidance from English regulating bodies, decide which of the two versions of the exam to require.

Organizations require the IELTS Academic test to assess a person’s proficiency level concerning undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Thus, it focuses more on the academic usage of the language. On the other hand, the IELTS General Training exam concentrates on a more practical application of English in workplaces and social situations. Canada, New Zealand and the UK consider this test as part of their immigration requirement.

Both contain four components, namely Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A nine-band scale is used to measure the proficiency level of the test taker—one refers to a non-user and nine refers to an expert user. High scores can open many overseas job opportunities.

IELTS Preparation

Preparation is the key to IELTS success. Examinees can train by enrolling in review center for IELTS or by self-studying. The former, which involves a classroom learning arrangement, is more advisable since IELTS instructors can guide test takers through their review. Review centers for IELTS are available throughout the country. In fact, there are IELTS review centers in Manila, Makati, Cebu and Davao.

All in all, professions that require language proficiency are once again in-demand abroad. Predominantly, English-speaking countries turn to competent assessment exams such as the IELTS to evaluate potential employees.  Getting a high band score in the assessment can improve a job seeker’s employment opportunities.
