First, you have to understand that communication is a process. It is an exchange of ideas focused on establishing a connection between two or more people. Hence, it requires both empathy and participation. In the IELTS review center in Manila, you will learn that there are four types of conversations, which can then be classified broadly based on the purpose and direction of communication.
It is important to know the types of conversations you engage in as this can determine your course of action. It also gives you a hint of the speaker’s intent thus, guiding your reaction. Here is a quick guide on the difference between the two classifications.
I. Based on the direction of communication:
• One-way conversation
If you are in a one-way conversation, only one person is talking while the rest listens.
• Two-way conversation
Participants in a two-way conversation play the role of both speaker and listener.
II. Based on purpose:
Participants in a cooperative conversation show interest in knowing and understanding the perspective of everyone involved.
Participants in a competitive conversation are more focused on their perspective.
Falling under these classifications are these four types of conversations. Take note that any of these types falls under more than one classification.

Discourse is a cooperative one-way type conversation. It is cooperative in nature because the speaker aims to deliver useful information to its listeners.
Dialogue is a two-way type conversation that is also cooperative in nature as it seeks to solicit and encourage an exchange of ideas among the participants. Furthermore, it also intends to create a connection within the group.
Diatribe is a one-way type of conversation. It is competitive in nature because it aims to express emotions, intimidating those who disagree and inspiring those who share the same perspective with the speaker.
A debate is a competetive two-way type conversation where participants express opposing views on one issue and aims to win an argument.
